His Excellency said that the Chinese residents of Hong Kong had contributed $30,000 towards the cost of the building and the Government, recognising the utility and value of the Society's efforts, had added to that amount a further sum of $20,000.
"The Po Leung Kuk Society has proved itself worthy of confidence," said the Governor, "and I ask you to concur with me in the hope that its future success may be greater still and that it may be the means of minimising, if not entirely suppressing this disgusting traffic."
The health of the Governor and the prosperity of the Po Leung Kuk Society were among the toasts honoured before the gathering broke up.

On November 13, 1896, the new home erected by the Po Leung Kuk Society was officially opened by Sir William Robinson.
The designs for the new building, it was stated, had been drawn up by Mr. A. Denison, and the building contract was awarded to the Wing On Company. The style of architecture adopted was Chinese, and the material used was stone with facings of mandarin green bricks.

The first Home of the Po Leung Kuk faced Tai-ping-shan Street, and splendid work was done there until a few years ago, when it was found to be inadequate for the calls made upon it. More money was raised, and on March 23, 1931, the present fine building, facing Leighton Hill Road, near Caroline Hill, was opened.
